In this series of articles, we have been discussing specialness and more specifically spiritual specialness because it is becoming a prevalent form in the Course community. Like all kinds of specialness, spiritual specialness is really a defense of the ego (against the opposite). It maintains the separation in your head as the spiritual reason behind differences. In this fifth article, we’re going to create the discussion around to idols because it is intended in A Course in Miracles (ACIM).
You will recall from the fourth article on fragmentation, we’re trying to become conscious of whenever we are choosing the ego (Ken Wapnick) as the ego could be the area of the mind that believes in division (T-5.V.3). Idols should warrant consideration and learning since they are ego:
Idol could be the symbol of the substitution of the ego for the true Self or god; a false belief that there might be something apart from, or maybe more than God, and thus separate from Him, a belief that will be then projected onto the special relationship: people, things or ideas (Glossary-Index for A Course in Miracles, Kindle location 550).
This is actually the answer to every problem that may confront you. In this world, you believe you are sustained by everything but God. Your faith is put in the absolute most trivial and insane symbols; pills, money, influence, prestige, being liked, knowing the “right” people, and an endless set of kinds of nothingness that you endow with magical powers. All these things are your replacements for the Love of God (Lesson 50).
Here within the dream, or illusion, the word symbol definition for “idol” is, “An individual or thing that is greatly admired, loved or revered.” Within the last few article on fragmentation, we also discussed how spiritually special Course teachers are cult leaders and the word symbol definition for a “cult” which most don’t consider is, “A misplaced or excessive admiration for a specific person or thing.” All of these symbols indicate a similar thing: Specialness in every its forms are idols meant to replace the Love of God and maintain the separation in the mind.
Throughout this series we’ve also known spiritual specialness as caring who they share the stage or limelight with, i.e., the special relationship and teaching their very own ego version of the truth. Pun intended on this 1: Let’s finish setting the stage for this discussion with the following quote from still another author:
Everybody is trying to find and express their truth a course in miracles. Their so-called the fact is actually designed to help keep them stuck where they are. What J is teaching in his Course is that the stark reality is not different for everyone. It’s not relative. He’s saying the stark reality is the reality whether you realize and agree with it or not. The truth is not susceptible to your interpretation, and neither is his Course. He’s the Teacher, you’re the student. If that’s incorrect, then why do the Course? (The Disappearance of the Universe, Gary Renard, page 92).
Idols of Specialness
Kenneth Wapnick is known for saying that the Course isn’t for many who believe they’re “spiritual giants” which spiritual specialness believes. Spiritual giants use the first law of chaos: The truth is different for everybody (T-23.II.2) that will be what Renard’s quote is pointing us toward understanding. This can not be said enough: Spiritually special “giants” teach their ego interpretation of the reality, i.e., many different kinds of idols meant to replace God’s Love and maintain the separation. If this is the heart of the problem, then it’s probably advisable to really want to understand why so you can learn when you’re choosing an idol, i.e., the ego.
The practical application of the Holy Spirit’s purpose is incredibly simple, but it’s unequivocal. Actually, in order to be simple it must be unequivocal (T-17.Vi.1:1-2). Jesus keeps saying that this is a very simple course… why it’s simple: It’s unequivocal. There are not two various ways of interpreting this course. The Course is what it is. It says what it says. It doesn’t say different things to different people (Rules for Decision, Kenneth Wapnick).
Yet, this really is precisely what spiritually special Course teachers as cult leaders are doing! Wapnick makes a very valid point that may help us understand whenever we are choosing an idol of specialness:
Have Jesus beside you within the illusion (and notice it says Jesus and not a spiritually special Course teacher) but don’t keep it that way. Don’t keep bringing Him to the illusion. You wish to figure out how to go where He’s (Kenneth Wapnick, parenthesis addition mine).
Therefore, it’s imperative that you are trying to the Holy Spirit rather than an idol to show you. What that means is first, idols are our personal kinds of specialness which we all act out in our lives for some reason or another. However, this also includes not projecting our specialness desires onto others by not picking a spiritually special Course teacher as a cult special idol thereby making that form of ego into a replacement for the Holy Spirit as our teacher that will be the same as a replacement for God’s Love.
Think about it. Cult leaders or the spiritually special don’t believe laws apply to them whether they’re breaking them outright or merely skirting the edges. History is filled up with examples. Actually, they don’t even think ethics affect them. They’re outside everything since they are “giants” chosen by God to do his work whether as leaders or group members. If you select to endorse their specialness, you select specialness for yourself because we’re most of the same. It’s not the case joining since it brings together what is first believed to be separate but isn’t really separate in reality. Belief in separation is reinforced, i.e., fragmentation is manufactured to appear real which divides the Sonship. There is no other reason on the amount of your head for why some are “in” the group and others are “out.”
Hence, the dream is a dream of devastation designed to conceal love and usurp God (Echoes of Eternity video on YouTube, Kenneth Wapnick). Therefore, it can not be kind to ourselves or these spiritually special Course teachers to help keep choosing idols of specialness to replace God’s Love whether we’re joining in their dream of specialness or making our own. There is no difference.
